Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual celebration which is held on every year on 18th July in honor of Nelson Mandela’s birthday. This Nelson Mandela International Day is also known as Mandela Day, which is celebrated to remember the all the achievements of Mandela of which he does in working towards democracy, human rights, conflict resolution, reconcilement, and peace. History of Nelson Mandela International Day Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa in the city Transkei, on 18th July 1918. He is one of the most famous activists of anti-apartheid in South Africa. In 1963, he was jailed because of the leading the freedom movement against apartheid and for his grace on the human right to live with freedom. His prisoner number was 466 and kept him in Robben Island, which is located in off Cape Town in South Africa. The prisoners in the Robben Island were never called by their names, but called by their numbers and year of imprisonment – So 46664 was Nelson Mandela’s prisoner number. Nelson Mandela was released in 1990 from prison and fed political debates in the country and take part in South Africa’s transition to a multi-racial democracy. After release from prison, Nelson Mandela continued addressing ethnic issues in his country and supported conciliation initiatives. In 1994, He became a South Africa’s president in the result of his efforts. He also won Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and He remained as president until 1999. In the year of 2007, Mandela formed the independent group of global leaders who offer their effects and experience to keep peace building, help humans who are suffering from significant causes and also promote shared interests of humanity. The first Nelson Mandela International Day was officially declared in November 2009 by the United Nations that the first Nelson Mandela International Day will celebrate in 2010. In November 2009, United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution announce July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day”. However, many other groups began celebrated Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July 2009. This day is celebrated to remember the achievements and contribution of Nelson Mandela to promoting human rights, resolving conflicts, reconciliation, and addressing on racial issues. How People celebrated Nelson Mandela Day? Nelson Mandela Day did not celebrate only Nelson Mandela’s life or as a day, but it is a day call to action for the people to realize their abilities, by this, it has a positive effect on other people around them. This day is celebrated to inspire the people to follow the values that Nelson Mandela shared. In these values include freedom, democracy, equality, reconciliation, respect, and diversity. Many activities are held around the world on Nelson Mandela Day. Many people and different organizations take part in these activities to promote Nelson Mandela Day. In these include sports, volunteer events, art competitions, educational seminars, music concerts, and cultural activities. Also, many other events are organized on Nelson Mandela International Day to promote Mandela’s achievement. Mandela Day celebrates a campaign as well, which is known as “46664”. This campaign focus expanded to broader humanitarian work. The struggle from Mandela Day supports the campaign’s continuous work and other Nelson Mandela humanitarian organizations. Is it a Public Holiday?
