There are various factors that influence the planet earth in different ways. One of them being Wetlands found in different parts of the world. To maintain balance, the role of Wetlands in the ecosystem is extremely important. To acknowledge the significance of Wetlands, 2nd February is also celebrated as World Wetlands Day across the globe. There are various Wetlands in the world; all possessing different characteristics. A large part of Wetlands in the world has been destroyed due to our negligence. United Nations has declared a keen interest in securing Wetlands as a significant part of the earth. The role of Wetlands in the ecosystem is linked to several benefits, a few of them are mentioned below: Prevention of Floods:Prevention of floods is a major role of Wetlands in the ecosystem. Wetlands absorb the water from rainfall with the help of roots of trees and the natural vegetation. They act as natural absorbents and help in slowing down the flow of water. Chances of a flood are reduced when the speed of water flow reduces; hence playing an important role in preventing a major portion of the world from the natural disaster of floods in the rainy season. Shelter to Animals:Wetlands have a tendency to provide shelter to the animals and other habitats living nearby. Many animals migrate to Wetlands in the dry seasons in the search of water and food. It provides them a shelter to survive through the tough seasons in different parts of the world. There is a largely fish-based diet available in these areas due to an excessive amount of water being stored. Without the shelter provided by the Wetlands, these habitats would die in any case. Our ecosystem largely depends on the Wetlands to maintain a balance in different habitats and hence, the role of Wetlands in the ecosystem can’t be overlooked in any case. Water Purification:Wetlands behave as natural filters to the water. Wetlands trap excessive nutrients and remove poisonous pollutants present in the water of rainstorms. Many toxic and organic matters are captured by the Wetlands and hence letting the clean water flow. Wetlands also block various bacteria and contaminants of water and allow the water to be filtered out. Therefore, the role of Wetlands in the ecosystem can’t be overlooked. In the presence of Wetlands around the globe, there is almost no need to filter water through any filtration plants. It also reduces the cost involved in the installation of filtration plants. Recreation Spots:In terms of tourism, Wetlands have a great reputation around the world. Wetlands act as beautiful recreation spots for people to come and stay. They provide an opportunity of fishing, picnics and at times sailing as well. There are various eye-captivating spots which act as the most beloved places for people to spend the holidays. Therefore, the role of Wetlands in the ecosystem can’t be neglected and their importance increases, even more, when it plays a vital role in bringing tourism. Food for Livestock:The role of Wetlands in the ecosystem is very important as it plays a critical role in providing food to the livestock. Plantation and grass are found in excessive quantity in Wetlands because these lands are rich in water. A supply of pure water also helps the livestock to stay here and feed themselves on food and water. There is a huge land where livestock can graze with a variety of grass spread in the area. Wetlands maintain a balance in our ecosystem by feeding the livestock in excessive amount. Supply during dry periods:The water stored in the rainy seasons in Wetlands is extensively utilized in the dry periods of the year by animals and human beings. The water is absorbed by the soil in rainy season which is stored in large quantities here. Unlike other areas where water becomes extinct in dry periods, Wetlands provide water to meet the demand of animals and birds throughout the year. For this purpose, the role of Wetlands in the ecosystem becomes even more important. Protection of biodiversity:Role of Wetlands in the Ecosystem is very important when we talk about different living creatures on earth which largely spend their time on Wetlands and depend on them for feeding. The excessive plantation is a source of attraction for the insects. Insects become a source of food for various other birds and fish. Birds are prey to various other predators and the cycle continues. This biodiversity factor plays an essential role in our environment to maintain balance in different species living on earth. Wetlands have become so very important for the survival of millions of creatures around the world. from http://www.upcomevent.com/the-role-of-wetlands-in-the-ecosystem/
