The Day of the Imprisoned Writers started in 1981 by PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee.
The Addressing of Salil Tripathi on Day of the Imprisoned Writer
Salil Tripathi, who is the chair of PEN International Writer in Prison Committee said:
“Writers should be writing when they want to write. They should not be in jail. And around the world-wide hundreds of Writers are in jail today, and others many more faced intimidation and oppression because they express expressed upsets the authorities to offend the powerful and unsettled governments. Writers are the conscience-keepers of the society, and they must remain free their place is not in jail, but with pen or paper, with typewriters and with their keyboards. And every year on this day, the entire PEN committee says in one voice that anywhere in the world we will continue to fight for freedom against cruelty for writers, who are prevented from his or her work.”

The World Prematurity Day is a day of Observance celebrated on 17 November annually around the world to raises awareness about the Preterm birth, the sorrow of preterm babies and their families. Every year about 15 Million babies are born preterm, more than one in 10 of all babies born worldwide. More than 1 millions babies die of these and others are facing lifelong health problems. Preterm birth is a serious problem that can happen to everyone around of us. We live in our culture or economic status regardless of the country.
History about World Prematurity Day
The first World Prematurity Day was celebrated on 17 November by the European parent organizations in 2008. It was celebrated for the first time. And after that, the World Prematurity Day was celebrated around the world in 2011. Since then many associations, groups, organizations, companies and others people on worldwide celebrated it. It is now celebrated throughout the world, including more than 60 countries and reaching about 1.5 billion people.
An estimated 15 million babies are born preterm, and about 1 million of these have died, and others face serious life problems. The preterm birth had the most significant cause of death for children under the age of 5. Causing this about 1 million deaths in 2015 worldwide. Many babies of preterm birth who faced the lifetime of disabilities, it includes learning disability, visual, listening, speaking and many others. Preterm birth and living small for gestational age, low-birth-weight (LBW) is the reason for this, and it is the critical indirect causes of neonatal deaths. About 60% to 80% of all neonatal deaths are by LBW. The 15.5% global spreading is by LBW, in which approximately 20 million LBW infants born each year, and 96.5% of them are from developing countries.
How can we reduce the Preterm Birth and Death Rate
People of the world can reduce the neonatal death and newborn mortality rates by making better the care for the mothers during childbirth and pregnancy and of LBW infants. The experience has clearly shown that appropriate care of LBW infants from developed and middle-income countries, including feeding, maintenance of temperature, hygienic cord, health, and skin care, and early detection and treatment of infection and diseases can reduce mortality.
This issue is a massive challenge around the world. And each year many families around the world affected by prematurity. It flows on a high impact on every local community. We all have a responsibility to play a role by supporting these families and by improving healthcare products in hospitals. World Prematurity Day is an opportunity to raises awareness of the heavy burden of deaths and handicap and the pain and hardship that causes preterm birth, additionally a chance to talk about solutions to problems.
The International Students Day is an international observance of Student’s community, and it is held annually around the world on 17 November. It is originally the date commemorates the anniversary of the 1939 Nazi storming of the Czech universities and the subsequent killing and sending students in concentration camps, it is now marked by many universities.
History about International Student’s Day
In 1941 the International Students Day was first marked in London by the International Student’s council in pact with the Allies and the successor International Union of Student has kept up this tradition, which has been pressing with National Union of students in Europe and other organizations to make the International Students Day an official United Nations observance. The date commemorates the anniversary of the Nazi storming of the University of Prague in 1939 after the demonstration against the killing of Jan Opletal and the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. The Nazis murdered the nine Students leader after rounding up. And over 1200 students sent to concentration camps, and later on the closing of all Czech universities and colleges.
The passage of time more exists Czechoslovakia, it had been divided under a fascist puppet government into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the Slovak Republic. In late 1939 the Nazi authorities of Czechoslovakia (it was called the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia at that time) suppressed a demonstration held by students of the Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague. On 28 October the demonstration was held to commemorate the anniversary of the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic. The student Jan Opletal was shot during this demonstration. And later on 11 November, he died from his injuries, and his body was supposed to be transported from Prague to his home in Moravia on 15 November. His funeral consisted of thousands of students who turned this event another Anti-Nazi demonstration. However, the result of this is turned in drastic measures being taken by the Nazi’s authorities. All Czech higher educational institutions were closed down, over 1200 students are arresting who were sent to concentration camps, and the hideous crime of all is that On 17 November nine students and professors are executing without trial. That’s why the date of 17 November had chosen for the International Students Day.
The nine students and professors who were executed on 17 November 1939 in Prague are listed below:
The Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia
The independent Students leaders together with the Socialist Union of Youth arranged a demonstration to commemorate the International Students Day in 1989. This 50th-anniversary event gave a chance to students to show their dissatisfaction with the ruling Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. By nightfall, what started as a cool memorial event turned into a violent one, with many Participants who were brutality beaten by riot police, red berets, and other members of law enforcement agencies. There were about 15,000 people participated in this demonstration. The only person left lying where this incident took place was thought to be the body of a student, but he is an undercover agent. The rumor that a fellow student has died due to the brutality of police triggered events that most perhaps the secret police were not envisaging. Students together with actors from theatres agreed to go on strike on that same night. The events linked to the International Students’ Day helped spark the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia of 17 November 1989.
As we know that students always have been on the front of the movement of change. Always when the country was in disaster student were standing in front of these issues, and they took the opportunity to show their opinion. Even he went against the current government’s values and beliefs. But unfortunately, these actions only took place when crisis rose up or when curtailment of human rights. Today on International Students Day students need to have committed to stand for human rights. They need to hear their voices and opinions. They have a responsibility if not towards themselves, towards those who will follow them, and to teach them what previous generations have left for us.

Almost all human beings are dependent on the presence of forests on our land for one or another reason. Forests help in making the environment clean and thus reducing the pollution factor from the atmosphere. Deforestation, over the years, has been a serious threat to the forests as it has resulted in a loss of so many species of trees. The lack of restoration process due to the negligence of human beings for the past few decades has made it even worst for Mother Nature to survive. Forests supply oxygen to the environment thus making it a healthy place to live and breathe. Deforestation could be either because of natural disasters or errors made by human beings. The role of forests management in this regard becomes so very important to prevent forests from destruction. The importance of forests on our land needs to be understood to realize the benefits we get from the trees. The role of forests management is not only restricted to preventing deforestation but planting trees in the process of restoration of forests destroyed due to natural disasters. Human beings cannot fight natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes that become a real cause of deforestation. An active role of forests management in preventing deforestation can bring a change that will be helpful in saving nature. There are several steps forests management needs to take without any further delay in order to kick-start the prevention of forests.
Planned cutting of trees:
The cutting of trees must not take place by hit and trial method. The process must involve a team of experts that understand the environment and its requirements. The team should make a proper plan for the annual cutting of trees. The role of forests management is important to implement the plan set by the experts in order to identify which trees can be cut down. Only the mature trees must be allowed to cut leaving behind the ones still at an early and growing age. The balance of forests must be maintained to allow a sequential growth of trees with the passage of time. Cutting new and growing trees would disturb the ecosystem to a great extent and leaving behind a major space that could not be filled in many years to come due to the age difference of trees. Therefore, the age of trees must be determined by proper testing and maintaining the record. In this way, we can easily distinguish the trees that have reached their age of cutting. The role of forests management again becomes significant to hold this process of cutting trees under their surveillance. This would allow them to maintain their data that would be really helpful in the following year.
Check Illegal logging:
In many parts of the world, the illegal logging of wood from the forests is an ongoing process. It takes place with the help of a few concerned departments’ staff. Different companies around the world take part in this logging of trees. The government officials are being paid by these companies to ignore their activities in the forests. Therefore, it doesn’t take place in the absence of anybody instead many officials are involved in these illegal activities. The higher authorities need to bring a check and balance system to point out the corrupt persons involved in allowing these activities to take place. The role of management is certainly very important in this regard to help to filter out such culprits from their department in order to save forests from deforestation. There is a severe threat to the forests due to this illegal logging of wood. It has been a cause of complete deforestation in various parts of the world. This process also forces the animals living in the forests to migrate to some other living place. Disturbing the environment of these animals may lead to their death and endangering species over a long period of time. The wildlife around the world is already facing a concerning level of extinction threat which makes the role of forests management extremely vital in preventing deforestation. These illegal activities must be stopped by the law enforcement and strict punishments to discourage anyone involved.
Training programs for staff:
The role of forests management is not just restricted to planning but also arranging various training programs for their staff working in the forests. The forests protection staff must also be trained in minimizing the effect of fire in forests. There must be training drills that allow them to understand how to encounter a fire situation in the forests. Fire brigade services must be trained to a professional level because ceasing fire in forests is not an easy job at all due to winds at high speed and lack of moisture. Any waste of time may lead to losing a large area of forests. The personnel must be highly trained in reaching the burning forest as quickly as possible. The staff should be provided with the modern day equipment with hands-on experience to encounter any worst conditions in the forest. It can be extremely challenging to encounter fire in forests due to natural disasters because it expands in a large area within no time. Moreover, the fire initiated by human beings must be taken control as soon as possible to avoid any harm to the entire forest. A small spark may result in burning a thick forest within a matter of hours. The staff deployed for the cutting of trees must be properly trained that depicts an active role of forests management. It’s a skillful job to cut trees in a specific way that can only be achieved with professionalism and experience.
Marking the cutting of trees:
A technique that is usually ignored by the authorities in most cases is the marking process. The places from where trees are cut down must be marked properly to make it easy when planting new trees. During the cutting of trees, the role of forests management should be to mark the points of cutting. While restoring the forests, it becomes really important to know where to plant the new trees. To make it easy, marking is the easiest technique to remember where the new tree would be planted. The staff must be trained to know each marking means a plantation of a new tree to that place. Missing even a single mark would result in one less tree in the forest. Therefore, an active and efficient role of forests management is required to achieve better results in preventing deforestation.
Understanding the environmental conditions of a forest:
All the forests in the world consist of different types of species of plants and trees. The sustainability of trees depends on their environment and surroundings. The role of forests management is very important since the requirement of each forest needs to be understood before planting new trees. The growth of trees depends on the environment they are planted into. Every forest has its own kind of plants and must be replaced with the similar ones. During the restoration of the forests destroyed by disasters, it’s important to identify which trees are most suitable to the environment. Trees can only be planted after understanding the requirement of the forest. Some trees tend to grow faster in warm areas whereas others are more suitable for the coldest places. One cannot mix them together for better results because it would only cause loss of investment and time for the management of the forests. Therefore, a team of experts needs to be established in the concerned management to study the behavior of plants and trees before planting them into any forest. The environmental effects must also be studied carefully before opting for any kind of trees for a specific region. All these factors play an important role in restoring the forests and need to be kept in mind which will make the role of forests management much more effective and efficient.
Considering the above factors, the role of forests management has to be active and efficient if anything needs to be done for the proper restoration of forests. This job should be taken seriously because it’s not only a job but you are making a contribution towards the betterment of earth and the next generations to come. A role of sincerity and hard work is required to conserve forests and make the environment healthier. Only then we can fight against the increasing effects of global warming on earth.
Background of International Day of Forests:
On November 28, 2012, a resolution was passed in the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the “International Day of Forests” on March 21. International day of forests allows us to understand the importance of trees and plants in our environment and raise awareness to save nature. Celebrating the International Day of Forests means the arrangement of different tree plantation campaigns to create awareness on national and international platform regarding the importance of forests on earth. For a bright future for next generations, it’s required to save forests and plant more trees to fight against the climatic changes our earth is facing at the moment. United Nations Forum on Forests plays an active role in organizing various events related to the plantation campaign around the world. International Day of Forests was first observed on March 21, 2013. According to a research, out of 30% of the forest covered land on earth; 32 million acres of forests are lost every year which also directly affects several species of animals and plants living on the earth. For the most part of the recent years, the world has underestimated the importance of forests that help in reducing a major part of carbon emissions in the environment.
The significance of International Day of Forests:
As earlier mentioned, forests have a significant importance in maintaining the temperature on earth, removing carbon emissions, supplying oxygen, maintaining the ecosystem, providing food and shelter, maintaining biodiversity and fighting against the pollution that is increasing day by day. International Day of Forests allows us to realize the serious threat to our planet earth in terms of rising temperature due to global warming. With the urbanization and industrialization, the world has experienced a significant loss of trees. A number of forests have been cleared for the construction of industries and expanding the urban areas. No doubt, the modern day technology has provided us with a number of facilities but ignoring the role of forests on their account would result in a drastic situation. Urbanization has definitely accommodated a large number of people who migrate to the cities for better opportunities of earning. But we cannot forget the fact that it cost us forests in return.
Forests are considered the lungs of the atmosphere. Without forests, life would not be possible because climatic changes will take over making the earth an unbearable place to live in terms of high temperature. The smoke and chemicals in the shape of gas emissions from the factories are continuously posing a serious threat to the ozone layer. On this International Day of Forests, we need to raise awareness of planting more trees to fight the damage to the ozone layer. Forests absorb the carbon content from these gas emissions hence making the environment clean enough to breathe. The damage to ozone layer means a rise in global warming. Global warming is caused due to the ultraviolet rays of the sun directly hitting the earth due to the damaged protection of the ozone layer. Trees produce oxygen and supply to the environment which helps a large number of species of animals to survive. International Day of Forests provides us an opportunity to realize the fact that forests are the backbone of our atmosphere and we should take necessary steps to save it from complete destruction. At the moment, a large of forest cover is damaged due to natural disasters and human negligence.
Deforestation occurs when forests are damaged either due to some natural disaster or negligence by human beings. The role of human beings in the destruction of forests is unbelievably higher than expected. Most of the fire in forests is initiated by a human error or negligence. The forests fire result in destroying a large area of forests hence making it very difficult to recover. On International Day of Forests, we need to contribute to the campaigns that help in growing new trees in the place of the ones being damaged. It has become very important to take the necessary steps in reforestation for the revival of old forests. Moreover, there are various tree plantation campaigns on International Day of Forests that support the afforestation process around the globe to help grow more trees and developing new forests. To sustain wildlife and protect the extinct species of animals, we need to work for the restoration of destroyed forests. These animals are forced to leave the forests and find a new place when their homes are destroyed and don’t get enough supplies of food and water. There are various non-profit organizations that work actively in the plantation of new trees and International Day of Forests is a huge platform to bring awareness among the common people to rise to the occasion and play their part in the betterment of the world.
Forests don’t only protect our atmosphere from pollution but also plays a vital role in the protection of soil from erosion. The roots of the trees hold the soil together with a strong support which saves us from land sliding at hilly areas. Soil erosion damages the land as well as various numbers of plants. International Day of Forests observed on 21st March every year allows us to find ways and dedicate our efforts in saving the trees and planting more of them for making this earth a better place to live. The damage to forests has become a global issue and the world needs to unite on this matter to find a solution to save trees. Out of our busy routines, we can dedicate “International Day of Forests” to the trees and join some organization for a volunteer work in planting trees and raising voice for saving trees. There is a need for education and awareness in many parts of the world to ensure any further loss of trees. People who are uneducated tend to cut trees to extract the wood for cooking food. The government needs to ensure proper facilities are provided in these backward areas where people themselves have become a serious threat to forests. A large number of forests are turned into a mere clear land by these people living around forests. The concerned authorities need to wake up and stop the people from these illegal logging processes.
Plantation on International Day of Forests:
Every one of us shall promise that on International Day of Forests, we will plant a tree at least as a contribution to nature. If we are capable enough to support any tree plantation campaigns financially, we should not hold ourselves back in this noble cause that would save the planet eventually. Planting trees are the best investment as far as saving nature and achieving better living atmosphere is concerned. International Day of Forests provides a global platform for all the people around the world to understand the threats faced by the forests and how can we prevent them from destruction. Although, the restoration process of forests is not an easy job at all we should look to find ways to slowly recover from the loss we have faced in many decades. To keep the environment clean and green, the plantation is the main source of providing the right atmosphere for this purpose. The people living in urban areas have a huge responsibility to plant trees around their homes. The green belts and roundabouts can be planted with trees that would help in minimizing the effect of the emissions from various combustion engine vehicles. Instead of making tough paves around the city, there must be green fields wherever possible for plantation purpose. The temperature in urban areas would also decrease to a great extent and people will be able to breathe in a healthy environment.
Ways to Help Cancer Patients:
Cancer is a disease that has taken away so many lives over the years with people unable to survive it. Stay ready to face any kind of rude behavior which is a normal thing while visiting any patient. There is no need to hesitate while giving them a hug because it can give them a lot of relief from the pain and feel good about the people around them. Gifts could be anything ranging from different books to toys, magazines to animated cards with words of love and support. Writing kind and supportive words would help cancer patients feel good to a great extent.
Talking to Cancer Patients:
It’s an encouraging act to talk to somebody suffering from cancer. At times, all that one need is to talk to somebody and express their feelings to them. Engage them in a conversation and show your support at each step of the whole ongoing process of treatment. Help cancer patients by boosting their confidence and showing your concern in this matter. Don’t make them feel bad about what they are already going through. A positive and encouraging conversation would help cancer patients fight against the disease with high spirits. Avoid any disturbance and turn off your mobile phone while you talk to the patient.
Listen to Cancer Patients:
Make the cancer patient feel comfortable talking to you and let them drive the discussion. Being a good listener is a positive attitude and you need to stay that way, even if it is annoying you. They might talk stuff that is stressful but being happy to hear and let them share their feelings is the best possible way to help cancer patients. Make them feel relax and talk for as long as they want. Let them be ahead in the discussion with their thoughts. Show your consent wherever required to acknowledge their point of view. Show some humor to keep the conversation alive and encouraging for the patient.
Activities with Cancer Patients:
The best way to divert the mind of a cancer patient from their pain and misery is to involve them in some sort of activity. To help cancer patients feel good, take them on a long drive and share the positive vibes with them. It’s very important to have a fresh mind to think positive and this is where it’s going to help the patient. Take them to a shopping mall and buy them clothes of their liking. In the meantime, beware of the care doctors have advised because many cancer patients are likely to be allergic to some specific kind of clothes. Enjoy your time with them and order a meal for both of you. Spend some quality time and let them know they have an equal importance in this world. In this way, you can help cancer patients in their fight against such a malignant disease.
